Excursion to Bieszczady Mts.

brownbear       This is proposition to explore nature and cultural heritage in the most southeastern corner of Poland. The Bieszczady Mts. are famous of picturesque landscapes with extraordinary alpine meadows ("poloniny"), scarce people density (only 5-25 per sq. km), unique flora and fauna with many threatened species, natural and primeval beech forests and inhabited by big predators like brown bears, wolves and lynxes. There are also herbivorous animals like i.e. legendary Carpathian deer, European bison and beaver.

Bieszczady National Park       The Bieszczady Mts. are localized close to state boundary with Slovakia and Ukraine. Bieszczady National Park, set up in 1973 protects the most valuable parts of the mountains. There is the third largest among Polish national parks with total area c. 29 000 ha. A significant part of Polish Bieszczady Mts. create "The East Carpathians" Biosphere Reserve - the only tri-lateral Biosphere Reserve in the World.

Until World War II the area of Bieszczady Mts. was dense occupied, but in 1947 almost all of the local people (about half of million) were displaced for political reasons. Forest and wild animals colonized completely destroyed villages. It created unique place where wild nature and remainders of old, rich culture could be still visited.
