Mission Statement and Activities
of the Carpathian Heritage Society

The Carpathian Heritage Society is a private, non-governmental organization committed to understanding and protecting the ecology and culture of the Carpathian Mountain Region. These goals are realized by promoting sound environmental, cultural, and educational initiatives.


Present projects include:
  • Restoring degraded streams
  • Increasing public understanding of the unique culture of the Carpathian region
  • Promoting the protection and renovation of churches, chapels, and cemeteries
  • Building an ecotourism business in the Reserve of Biosphere "Eastern Carpathians"
  • Encouraging the protection of native genetic resources like fruit trees and shrubs
  • Promoting of individual, ecological wastewater treatment systems - see http://www.oczyszczalnieogrodowe.pl/


Educational activities
  • Environmental training for local governments, non-governmental organizations, schools, etc.
  • Seminars on ecological agriculture, agrotourism, sustainable development, and ecotourism (e.g., bird watching, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or canoeing, all combined with nature studies)
  • Organizing competitions to test and encourage knowledge of the Carpathian region (Green Carpathian Bridge)
  • Publishing maps, guides, leaflets, and reprints.


Additional activities
  • Formulating sustainable development strategies for municipalities and regional governments
  • Designing specific strategies for using renewable energy resources, for employing waste-water treatment facilities, and for protecting important natural areas
  • Conducting ecological surveys of unique natural areas
  • Promoting Carpathian folk art
  • Building a broad ecological database of the Carpathian region that includes significant natural areas and real or potential environmental threats
